Cricket id please

In Portland garden on geranium foliage, 6 Aug 2018. Think it's a mottled grasshopper but problem with the length - this was well over 3cm, probably more. Thanks Peter.

Common field grasshopper

I would have said this was a female common field grasshopper which also happens to be one of the two most common grasshopper species on Portland. Mottled grasshoppers are usually associated with heathland and tend to be found mainly in the Poole basin. Tricky chaps grasshoppers as they can be quite variable in colour so other factors have to be taken into consideration.

Many thanks Peter. Friend has just lent me the wonderful 1988 "Grasshoppers and Allied Insects of Great Britain and Ireland" by Marshall and Haes, and of course, you are right.  Tricky is an understatement by the way. Thanks again.
